Benefits of being a UROC Scholar

Students can become a UROC scholar by participating in any of the programs that UROC offers (see below). While each UROC Scholar develops specific and unique skills based on their program, all UROC Scholars will develop these following skills through participation in our Summer Undergraduate Research Institute (SURI)*, ongoing workshops and outreach visits during the academic year, and the Path to Grad School workshop series every fall semester:

  • Effective oral and written communication
  • Critical thinking and complex problem solving
  • Effective interdisciplinary teamwork
  • Effective cross-cultural collaboration
  • Effective local and global civic engagement
  • Demonstrated integrity and ethical responsibility
  • Demonstrated understanding of global context and issues
  • Demonstrated ability for self-reflection
  • Enhanced leadership experience

Student Eligibility

Each of our programs has a different set of eligibility requirements. To learn more about which programs might be the best fit for you, click here.

Here is a short overview of each program:

  • SOAR - Summer Opportunity for Advanced Research*
    • This program is a great choice if you have previous research experience and already working with a faculty mentor or PI. 
  • SURF - Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship*
    • This program is open to any discipline and does not require any research experience. If you know you want to do research but aren't set on a particular field, this is a great option.
  • UROC-H - Undergraduate Research in the Humanities*
    • This program is specifically for scholars looking to do qualitative, humanities research but do not have any experience. Majors that should apply to this program are: Anthropology (cultural), Sociology, Ethnic Studies, and Global Arts.
  • CAMP - *
  • CAMP JGI - *
  • UC LEADS - UC Leadership Excellence through Advanced Degrees*
    • This is a two year program that focuses on stem research and requires that you have at least two years before you graduate. The first summer you will do research with a UC Merced Faculty on campus and the second summer you will have the opportunity to do research at another UC Campus of your choice pending matching.
  • UCDC - Washington Program
    • UCDC offers undergraduate students in their third or fourth year an exciting opportunity to take courses and complete an internship experience during a fall or spring semester's residence in our nation's capital.
  • UCCS
