David Delgadillo
My UC LEADS experience has been one of the most valuable experiences I have ever had the pleasure to be a part of. I am the first in my family to be graduating from a four-year university and I certainly could not have done it without the support of my family and the individuals that I was exposed to through the UC LEADS program.I remember the first time I was trying to explain my summer internship to my parents, both first generation immigrants, they did not really understand what I had to do, but they told me that they would support me as much as possible. My father then pulled me aside and explained how proud he was of me and how he was officially handing off the torch to me so that I continue to move the family forward. My mentors have pushed me to become the best version of myself and I will forever be grateful for their support and continued expectations of me. I am happy to announce that I will be attending the University of California, Santa Cruz as a Chemistry PhD candidate."The traveler sees what he sees, the tourist sees what he has come to see." -Gilbert K. University of California, Merced-Class of 2017
Bachelors of Science-Biological Sciences, Human Biology Emphasis
David conducted research on the synthetic methodologies of novel non-innocent ligand catalysts and heterocycle radical functionalization under the supervision of Ryan Baxter Ph.D., UC LEADS and CAMP. He got involved with research after taking the Honors Organic Chemistry course with Dr. Baxter. He consistently mentioned the benefits of undergraduate research, so he did his best in his class and then proceeded to join his lab after the course had concluded. Dr. Baxter then encouraged him, in addition to, his lab mates to apply for research fellowships so that they could continue to conduct reserach throughout the summer; that is when he discovered the wonderful realm that is UROC. Once he got accepted into the CAMP and UC LEADS programs he was exposed to amazing personal development sessions, as well as professional development exercises. The research fellowship programs offered through UROC allowed for him to work on his weaknesses and to build upon his strengths, both individually and as a member of my community.
