Spring Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)
The Spring Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program provides funding for UC Merced undergraduates majoring under the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts (SSHA). Qualified students with an interest in pursuing a research opportunity at UC Merced are encouraged to apply. This program is funded directly through the Division of Undergraduate Education.
Program Eligibility and Requirements
To be eligible for selection, each applicant must:
- Be enrolled in a UC Merced undergraduate degree program through Spring 2026
- Be have a major in the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts (SSHA)
- Be in a good academic standing with a cumulative GPA of 3.0, preferred but not required
- Be able to demonstrate potential for success in a graduate program
The following materials are needed to complete the UC Merced SURF application:

Essay responses, as described in the online application

One letter of recommendation

One cumulative unofficial transcript from the my.ucmerced.edu portal

Resume or CV
Spring 2026 Application will open on November 1st and close on December 7th, 2025!
Undocumented students are eligible for this program.
