NYU Langone Medical Center Summer Undergraduate Research Program

The Sackler Institute at NYU School of Medicine is a division of the Graduate School of Arts and Science of New York University, offering programs in the basic medical sciences, leading to thePh.D. degree and, in coordination with the Medical Scientist Training Program, combined M.D./Ph.D. degrees. Students can do their thesis research in the laboratories of more than 240 faculty members at the Medical Center who have appointments in basic science or clinical departments and associated faculty located at the main campus (Applied Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Sciences, Center for Neural Science and Physics).  Interdisciplinary training is offered in 12 different programs: Biomedical Imaging, Biomedical Informatics, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Developmental Genetics, Immunology and Inflammation, Microbiology, Molecular Biophysics, Molecular Oncology and Tumor Immunology, Molecular Pharmacology, Neuroscience and Physiology, Pathobiology and Stem Cell Biology.

The Institute is the largest fulltime PhD granting division of New York University awarding >45 Ph.D.degrees per year. As of September 1, 2014 the Sackler Institute has approximately 246 Ph.D. and 75 M.D./Ph.D. candidates and admits an average of 50 new students annually (~40 to the PhD program and 10 to the MD/PhD Program). The student body is extremely diverse: students are drawn from a pool of highly qualified national and international applicants. Approximately 20% of the students are from underrepresented backgrounds, 60% are women, and 25% are international (from 5 continents and 27 different countries). All Ph.D. students are supported by either assistantships or traineeships, which carry stipends of $34,700 per year (for 2014/15 academic year). In addition, all tuition, fees and health insurance costs are covered. Financial support is provided for the entire duration of study. Subsidized housing is guaranteed to all graduate students at the NYU Medical Center in University-owned buildings within or near the campus.

Students enroll in theSackler Institute’s "Open Program", which allows the opportunity to perform research rotations during their first academic year in any laboratory of a member of the graduate faculty in the Sackler Institute, regardless of their departmental or training program affiliation. Students select a thesis advisor and program affiliation by the end of their first academic year. This is accomplished with the help of Graduate Advisors, exposure to all research possibilities through a series of faculty seminars, and participation in elective courses in the various disciplines.

For the past 10 years underrepresented students have made up between 20 and 25% of our US applicant pool and a similar number in our matriculating class. The retention and graduation of these students is as important as the increases in the number of applicants and matriculates into our program. For the past 10 years the retention and graduation rates of our underrepresented students have been the same as that for our majority students (~85%). In the past 5 years 33 underrepresented students have received their doctorate degrees from Sackler programs. According to NSF and AAMC data, this would rank NYU/Sackler in the top 10 programs in the US in the production of URM PhDs in the biomedical sciences.

Each summer, the Sackler Institute and the Office of Diversity Affairs sponsors a research internship program in the biomedical sciences for undergraduate students. The purpose of the program is to give highly qualified students, who are interested in pursuing careers in the biomedical sciences (Ph.D., M.D. or M.D.-Ph.D.), the opportunity to conduct research, while exposed to the excitement of an academic medical environment at a major research center. Students may work with faculty in the disciplines of biochemistry, bioinformatics, biomedical imaging, cellular and molecular biology, clinical investigation, developmental genetics, forensic pathology, immunology, microbiology, molecular oncology, neuroscience and physiology, parasitology, pharmacology, structural biology and virology. Each student receives a stipend of $3500, round trip travel expenses to NewYork City, and accommodations in University Housing.
